This Salt Spring waterfront home is ideally sited on a quiet, light-filled bay, minutes from the town centre. The home had substantial structural and layout issues and was sorely in need of a full renovation.
The new owners’ initial feeling of walking into an east coast cottage was their inspiration for the dramatic transformation.
Approaching the entry, one is greeted by crisp white trimwork, accenting the abundant windows, and cedar shingles. On the interior, the original claustrophobic entry and hallway were opened up to become a spacious, light-filled place to welcome visitors. The stairs to the lower level were re-oriented, adding to the airy quality.
The open-plan great room boasts a gourmet kitchen with butcher-block topped island. With the existing stone fireplace retained, the living area is a comfy spot to curl up and take in the wide ocean vistas. Other unique and appealing features include private outdoor areas off the ensuite and guest baths, and a lower level media room.
Every aspect of the house was updated, from beefing up the wall studs, to a new roof with increased pitch, to windows, doors, siding, electrical and plumbing, to decking and landscaping. Hours were spent caulking existing tongue & groove ceilings to retain the original character but ensure the great room would be warm and cozy. The heating system was revamped from baseboard heaters to a heat pump. The extensive effort paid off, not only in aesthetic value, as the energy rating went from a sorrowful 54 to 80, the equivalent of a newly built home.
This timeless home is truly a labour of love.
