Oceanfront Retreat

Nestled between a forest of old firs and arbutus, age-old rock outcroppings and a serene stretch of the Salish Sea, this contemporary home blends seamlessly into the land. The flat roof ensures that the profile is low, and the colour palette melds with the landscape. The lot slopes sharply to the ocean offering sweeping vistas from the wall of glass on the south side.

On the exterior, a black stain was chosen for the cedar siding and fascia, with highlights of natural tight-knot cedar below the windows and on the soffits. Western Window Systems aluminum windows and doors in a matte black finish, inside and out, integrate the colour scheme. Deep overhangs and synchronized electronic blinds ensure shade from the hot summer sun but allow for passive solar gain in the winter months.

Although not a large house, the architect has cleverly designed the 2400 square feet to offer 3 bedrooms, office and media room, along with a separate garage/studio. The open-plan great-room creates a perfect entertaining space flowing from kitchen to dining to living areas. In nice weather, the party spills through substantial sliding doors onto the spacious deck, again with stunning ocean views, and a gas fireplace.

Among the many exceptional yet low-key finishes, the walnut cabinetry in the kitchen is repeated in the living area at the opposite end of the great-room creating a sense of balance. The bookended walnut veneer wall cladding and shelving, surrounding the granite fireplace, lends a cosy feel. The kitchen countertops and raised hearth, which wraps the living room, are Dekton (a combination of quartz, porcelain, and glass) emphasizing the cohesive feel of the space. Statement pendants over the island and living areas add a splash of drama, while the Craft Ferrera wide-plank engineered flooring anchors the room.

The master suite is a sanctuary, with an ocean view soaker-tub, large glass shower enclosure and private access to the screened garden and outdoor shower. The custom walk-in-closet is strategically placed between the bedroom and office.

This tasteful home is packed with extraordinary features yet feels unassuming and very liveable. And then there is the view …
